Deep Submersible Project – ALVIN Deep Submergence Vehicle

ALVIN upgrades enable dives to nearly four miles.

This presentation describes a successful multidisciplinary engineering project directed at upgrading the ALVIN deep submersible vehicle to allow the vehicle to dive to depths approaching four miles. With this upgrade, ALVIN became capable of covering 98% of the ocean floor. The ALVIN vehicle has been and is used for oceanographic research, mineral and marine life exploration, and rescue efforts. The original ALVIN vehicle was launched in 1964. Project participants included Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Southwest Research Institute, the US Navy and a number of subcontractors. Ivan Caplan was the materials technology consultant on this project.

IVAN CAPLAN

  Ivan Caplan is past President of the Maritime Technology Alliance, a not-for-profit dedicated to supporting naval and maritime entities in Maryland and the surrounding area. He is currently President of G.I.A. Associates, Inc., a technology and business development consulting company focused on supporting both large and small businesses involved developing and deploying technology for the US military.


Mr. Caplan had a long career with the US Navy R&D community spanning over 35 years. He was Navy Program Manager for Shipboard Environmental Treatment Systems Development, Head of the US Navy’s Titanium Technology Program Office, Manager of the Office of Naval Research Ship & Submarine Materials Applied Research Program, Director of the US Navy Corrosion Control Program and Manager of the Advanced Materials & Processing Research Program for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.


Mr. Caplan’s educational background includes a BS in Metallurgy from Drexel University and a MS in Mechanics & Materials Science from The Johns Hopkins University. He is also a Graduate of the Federal Executive Institute and MIT’s Sloan School of Business. Mr. Caplan holds several patents, received numerous distinguished awards, and has co-authored more than 40 technical papers.
