From a maritime perspective, examines evolution versus revolution, the development ’S’ curve, and runs though a number of historical examples from ancient ram/corvus, sail to steam, wooden hulls to iron/steel, dreadnoughts, submarines, naval aviation & aircraft carriers, missiles, and implications for future in digital/computers/comms and autonomy and other potential future disruptive technologies.
Concludes with an introduction on ways to find funding for examination/development of disruptive technologies.

Michael Bosworth is an independent consultant in ship design, technology strategy, development and transition, history, & engineering workforce development.
Michael retired from government (naval) civil service in June 2022 as Director of the Navy’s Center for Innovation in Ship Design (CISD) , a ship/boat/unmanned-systems designer recruitment & workforce development school. Previous positions at Naval Sea Systems Command included Science & Technology Director of Program Executive Office for Unmanned & Small Combatants (PEO-USC); deputy (& acting) Group Director for Technology (SEA 05TB); Division Director for Ship & Force Architecture Concepts (SEA 05D1); Branch Head for Transitional Research & Development (SEA 05D1T); & entrepreneurial R&D program manager for a half dozen programs in maritime design, technology, & tech strategy.
He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy, 1972-1996, holds three degrees in naval architecture & marine engineering from the Naval Academy and MIT, & between two government careers, he worked for Syntek Technologies.
He was awarded the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) Gold Medal for 2020, the DCCEAS regional Engineer of the Year designation for 2022, and is currently with AOC Inc. of Vienna Virginia.
